When I think of the term "world" music, or "global" music I immediately picture african tribes dancing to drums around a fire. I picture hawaiians hula dancing or dancing with fire in their grass skirts. I see belly dancing in the Middle East. Kathak in india. Salsa dancing in Spain. Yangko Dance in China. I see culture when I think of "world" music. I see the way people all around the world have their traditions and the way the use music. I like seeing how music from other culture can roll over into others and blend in incredible ways together...
Like the video A-WA: 'Habib Galbi' (Love Of My Heart). I feel like that is a very American sounding song and I think that it was interesting watching it and to find similarites with music here in America. It has some EDM thrown in which is a huge trend here right now. It was produced by Tomer Yosef, whose band Balkan Beat Box provided the hooky samplefor the Jason Derulo hit "Talk Dirty," Which I could totally see so I thought that was really neat. I liked the video too, I think it fight with the song and it was just really interesting to see.
This is what I think when I hear "Global" or "World" muisc. I'm very excited over the next weeks to dig deeper into cultures and discover music that I might have never heard of!
